The Serbian Orthodox Church in Vitina is one of many Serbian churches the 10th Mountain Division troops in Kosovo guard twenty-four hours a day. Following the NATO bombing in 1999, ethnic Albanian refugees returning home took revenge on Serbs by destroying 76 Serb churches around the province.

The church in Vitina is situated on the bank of a creek that soldiers call the "ethnic fault line" between Serbs and Albanians. Serbs live to the right; Albanians to the left.
