(08/19/10) A SUNY Potsdam student found a rare fossil during a geology field trip out west this summer. Owen Brown, a senior from Beekmantown, was one of seven students studying the Great Basin in Utah and Nevada. They visited caves, mining operations and studied geologic formations. Todd Moe spoke with Owen and his mentor, Dr. Chris Kelson, an assistant professor of geology at SUNY Potsdam, about the trip and the fossil. They say it's a rare fossil of a 500-million year old invertebrate called Anomalocaris, a long-extinct marine species that fed on ancient trilobites. It was a lucky find.

Emergency farm meeting planned
(08/21/07) Severe storms last Thursday knocked out power to thousands of people across the North Country and Vermont. Strong winds downed trees and power lines, even blew over a tractor-trailer on the Adirondack Northway. The fast-moving storms also produced hail which hit some area farm fields hard. Damage to crops was severe in the Beekmantown area. Clinton counties cooperative Extension is holding an emergency meeting today at noon to talk about what farmers can do to salvage as much of their harvest as possible. Field corn, hay and soybeans will be the focus. The meeting will be held at the Bill Atwood farm on the corner of Burke and Pardy roads. Martha Foley talks with horticulturist Amy Ivy about today's meeting.

Beekmantown Neighbors Want Windpower Delay
(03/21/06) A group of neighbors in Beekmantown is urging the zoning board to delay a decision scheduled for Wednesday on a proposed new wind farm. Windhorse LLC hopes to develop 13 new wind towers in the community. Town officials told the Press Republican newspaper that only residents living within 500 feet of the project were notified. The newspaper also reports Beekmantown officials have already recognized the project as an "essential" service similar to a public utility. Concerned residents met with town officials last night. Neighbor William Hutton told Brian Mann that too many local people weren't notified about the wind farm until recently, and never had the opportunity to provide input.
