Creating healthier workplaces
We're all humans, and not all of our employees are as healthy as they'd like to be.
(01/25/12) Did you make a New Year's resolution to lose weight or get more exercise? Some local small businesses are doing their part to help their employees stay healthy at the workplace. Wellness programs are not new. They've been staples at large companies for years, but are less likely to be used at small businesses. That's changing.

Amid soaring health spending, there is growing interest in workplace disease prevention and wellness programs to improve health and lower costs. Eager to control rising health care costs, small firms in St. Lawrence County are turning to a health experts for help. Todd Moe has more.

Get into GEAR adventure race
(09/17/09) Tomorrow is the deadline to enter the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative's 3rd annual adventure race. It's a benefit for the not-for-profit. It'll be held on September 26. The Health Initiative's Carol Zimmerman told David Sommerstein the race is a triathalon for the whole family.

New project seeks to fight obesity
(08/22/07) Childhood Obesity is a major public health problem in New York State. One in five North Country children are overweight. The Eat Well Play Hard Program was launched earlier this year across the region to help prevent childhood obesity and reduce long-term risks for chronic disease. It's part of a national project that promotes eating healthy and getting exercise. Jamie Bentley is coordinator of Eat Well Play Hard at the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative. (01/13/06) Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that fuses dance, music, and song. Capoeira classes are growing in popularity across the United States. On Thursday nights in Lake Placid, the gym at the North Country School is transformed by the sounds of the drum and the berimbau, the stringed gourd that's at the heart of capoeira. David Sommerstein attended a class and has this audio montage.

(03/08/05) More than 60% of Americans are overweight or obese. That number is even higher in the North Country. Most alarming is that obesity among children is skyrocketing. Health officials are calling it an epidemic. They warn overeating will shorten our life expectancy if the problem goes unchecked. Last week, the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative held a forum to discuss why North Country residents are so overweight, and what can be done about it. David Sommerstein reports.
