(12/01/11) A new book profiles the early history, founders, and staff of St. Lawrence County's first hospital, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg. It opened in 1885, and over the years, the hospital has housed a nursing school and was the first to bring many new health services to the region, including an artificial kidney machine in the late 1960's.

Todd Moe talks with Cyndy Clusen and Kelsey Redpath, creators of the latest Arcadia photo book that celebrates Claxton-Hepburn's past. They'll lead a discussion about the hospital and the new book at the Brewer Bookstore in Canton this Saturday afternoon at 1 pm.

(03/23/09) Four elderly residents died at a group home in Hamilton County on Saturday following an early morning fire. The blaze struck the Riverview home in the town of Wells, which is operated by New York state. Two staff members and a fifth patient were also injured. Brian Mann has our story.

(03/23/09) Dozens of patients and staff were evacuated from Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake on Sunday following a powerful explosion that destroyed the hospital's boiler room. Martha Foley has details.

(05/13/08) Yesterday in Saranac Lake, the US Postal Service unveiled a new stamp honoring Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau. Trudeau was a pioneering physician and tuberculosis researcher. But he was also invented the community of Saranac Lake, which remains the biggest community in the Adirondacks. Trudeau's sanatorium closed a half-century ago, but as Brian Mann reports, his work continues to echo through American culture.

(11/02/07) Hudson Headwaters Health Network announced this week that four major private insurers have agreed to boost reimbursement rates for basic medical care. Dr. John Rugge is CEO of Hudson Headwaters, which operates clinics throughout the southern and eastern Adirondacks, as well as the Champlain Valley. He says his organization is still struggling to end a shortage of primary care doctors. Rugge also told Brian Mann that this settlement with insurance companies won't help other hospitals and clinics in the region, but could serve as first step toward broader reform.

(08/31/07) Governor Eliot Spitzer says he'll hold a public hearing on health care next week at the Glens Falls Civic Center. According to the Department of Health, the gathering on Wednesday will be the first of a series of statewide hearings meant to focus attention on expanding insurance coverage and improving the health care system. Governor Spitzer and Health Commissioner Richard Daines will both attend. Health experts in the North Country say they hope to focus attention on this region's desperate doctor shortage. Some of the region's best physicians and administrators held their own summit yesterday in Lake George. They warned that the North Country's network of quality health care is beginning to unravel. Brian Mann reports.

(08/07/06) The 33rd annual Can-Am Rugby tournament was held over the weekend in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. Roughly a hundred teams from around the Northeast and Canada competed. The local favorites, the Mountaineers Old Boys, from Saranac Lake, reached the finals yesterday, but lost to an 45-and-older team from White Plains, New York. Brian Mann spent a couple of days watching the scrum and has our story.

(10/12/05) The pharmaceutical company Wyeth will lay off 1200 workers at its plant in Rouses Point. The announcement was made yesterday afternoon. The layoffs will be phased in over the next three years. Officials in Clinton County say the plant closure removes one of the North Country's economic engines. As Brian Mann reports, the decision followed a sharp decline in the sales of premarin, a hormone therapy drug manufactured in Rousses Point.

(09/26/05) The National Institutes of Health has awarded 3.4 million dollars to the Trudeau Institute in Saranac Lake. The grant will match a New York state grant. In a statement, Congressman John McHugh praised NIH for supporting an "outstanding facility." Brian Mann spoke with Trudeau president Dr. Suzy Swain, who says the project will add new lab space. Trudeau Institute began as a tuberculosis cure hospital in the late 1800s and now employs 140 people, including 75 research scientists.

(04/06/04) The Adirondack Community Trust is accepting applications for the second round of the U. R. Plante Medical Scholarship Fund. The Plante Fund gives out an annual scholarship for a student attending medical school, who has lived in Clinton, Franklin, or St. Lawrence Counties for at least two years.
