(06/15/11) A dozen post offices in the North Country may close by the end of the year. These closings are part of the post office's response to record losses and declining mail volume as more people communicate electronically. The post office says they plan to close 2000 locations by next year.

That plan aims to adjust and streamline postal service after losses of 8.5 billion dollars in fiscal 2010. But some say those losses could be negated with a change to the post office pension funds. Steve Knight has more. more

(03/19/08) British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke died in Sri Lanka at age 90 yesterday. He came to fame in the 1960s when his short story, "The Sentinel," was made into the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Clarke's descriptions of space travel and super-computers inspired readers and scientists. Parishville science fiction writer David Kyle told Todd Moe that he met Clarke back in the 1940s and maintained a lifelong friendship.

(09/12/07) A couple of food experts from Vermont will visit the North Country this week. Vermont chef and food historian Amy Trubek, and Vermont Fresh Network Director Meghan Sheradin will speak at GardenShare's annual Local Harvest Dinner in Parishville this Friday night. Both are passionate about bringing locally produced food into homes and restaurants. Todd Moe spoke with them about the pleasures of producing and consuming locally grown foods. Amy Trubek is also an anthropologist who teaches courses about food and culture at UVM. She moved to Vermont 13 years ago and says people are rediscovering the benefits of buying local food.

(11/10/04) At least three towns in southern St. Lawrence County are taking on Albany over a massive land deal with International Paper. Colton, Piercefield, and Hopkinton have vetoed the state's purchase of conservation easements on more than 33,000 acres of land within their town borders. Parishville was expected to joiin them last night. If the vetoes stand, they would prevent the state from conserving land only in those towns. Overall, the IP deal would protect nearly 260,000 acres of Adirondack land in 9 counties. It would be the largest such deal in state history. Stephen Borey is supervisor of the town of Hopkinton. He spoke with David Sommerstein. He says the state failed to compromise with the towns on their biggest concern - the construction of public ATV trails on the new tracts.

Helen Taylor Condon, traditional rug braider from Parishville; Ralph Morrow, builder of traditional Adirondack guideboats in Saranac Lake; and the New Bremen Ice Harvest, a community tradition of the Lewis County hamlet's volunteer fire department, will receive North Country Heritage Awards. (01/05/01) Homes made of straw have come a long way since the folktale about three little pigs and a big bad wolf. As traditional building materials such as wood and drywall are getting more expensive, many environmentally aware people are turning to other materials to build their homes, not only for cost, but also for insulation, ease and visual appeal. A North Country couple chose straw construction a few years ago as an antidote to cookie-cutter home designs and to build it themselves. They also harness the power of the sun as a cure for big electric and lighting bills. It may sound primitive, but as Todd Moe found out, their Parishville home is warm and inviting
