(12/09/11) William Luce's one-woman play celebrating the life and poetry of Emily Dickinson, The Belle of Amherst, will be presented in a special performance benefiting residents of the Town of Jay who experienced the devastating effects of Tropical Storm Irene this summer. The one-woman show will be performed Saturday night (7 pm) at BluSeed Studios in Saranac Lake. Todd Moe talks with Jay actress Kathleen Recchia, who reprises her role as Dickinson for this special performance, about the show and clean-up efforts that still continue this month.

(11/30/11) Our guest, Kevin Young, is one a new generation of poets who find inspiration in the bittersweet history of Black America. Among his many books of poetry: Ardency: A Chronicle of the Amistad Rebels, Dear Darkness and For the Confederate Dead. Dale Hobson and Jackie Sauter host, along with guest Sarah Barber.

Kevin Young appears as part of the St. Lawrence University Writers Series. He will give a reading on the St. Lawrence University campus in Canton, NY, Thursday, December 1 at 8 pm in the Sykes Common Room.

(09/16/11) Three Saratoga area women won their third award this year from the Adirondack Center for Writing for a book of poetry. They'll share their thoughts and words tonight (7:00pm) at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts.

Elaine Handley, Marilyn McCabe and Mary Sanders Shartle began working together at the Saratoga Springs Public Library coffee shop in the late 90's, and realized that even in sharing common themes their three voices were very different yet compatible.

In a phone conversation with Todd Moe, they each shared a poem from their latest chapbook, Tear of the Clouds. Elaine Handley says the idea of writing poems about life in the North Country was a logical next step for all three poets.

(04/26/11) April is National Poetry Month. We asked St. Lawrence University President William Fox to share some of his favorite poems. President Fox often begins his talks with alumni groups with a poem. He shared his thoughts about poetry and reading poems out loud with Todd Moe.

(03/09/11) Our guest is poet Patrica Smith. Her poetry collection, Blood Dazzler, was a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award; Teahouse of the Almighty was a National Poetry Series selection and winner of the first-ever Hurst-Wright Award in Poetry. Smith has been a featured performer on HBO's Def Poetry Jam and she has performed three one-woman plays.

(02/11/11) The St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival's artistic director will play cupid on Valentine's Day, delivering Shakespeare Sonnet-Grams in Prescott and Brockville, Ontario. Ian Farthing spoke with Todd Moe and shared some of his favorite love poems. For a $25 donation, Ian says he'll deliver the Sonnet-Gram dressed in white tie and tails on Monday. (04/29/10) In celebration of National Poetry Month, the St. Lawrence University Brewer Bookstore held it's annual Poetry Slam this week. We invited three members of the SLU community to share their winning poems and a surreal, community "Mad-Lib". SLU seniors Mwelwa Bwalya and Gavin Bennett, along with the bookstore's Paul Haggett, joined Todd Moe in the studio for a mini poetry slam.

(04/09/10) Songs, poetry and stories that depict pivotal events of the past century are part of An American Journey being presented Saturday night (7:30) in Potsdam. Women's Suffrage, the Great Depression, the civil rights era and the AIDS crisis are included in an evening of musical theater in Clarkson's Snell Auditorium in downtown Potsdam. Admission is free. The show is a nostalgic look at the struggles, tragedies and triumphs in 20th century America. Todd Moe talks with three cast members, Angela Conzone, Sarah Hope and Bernie Mulvaney about their artistic journey through the last century.
