(12/26/11) A green group in the Adirondacks is trying to block the reopening of an industrial railroad line that stretches into the High Peaks region of the Park.

Protect the Adirondacks says the move would violate an easement that allows the railroad to operate in an area designated as part of the "forever wild" forest preserve. As Brian Mann reports, state officials have also raised questions about the project. more

(02/20/08) Less than a week after the state unveiled a plan to add more than fifty thousand acres of the former Finch, Pruyn land to the Adirondack forest preserve, the Spitzer administration has unveiled the purchase of another big chunk of land. State officials say New York has acquired nearly 7000 acres of land around Tahawus, in the Essex County town of Newcomb. Brian Mann has details.

(05/16/05) A Houston-based company called NL Industries plans to rip up more than twenty miles of railroad track in the central Adirondacks. The rail line runs from North creek to the Tahawus mine, which sits at the foot of the High Peaks. NL Industries hopes to sell the rails for scrap metal. Critics say the track should be preserved. As Brian Mann reports, there are also questions about how the rail-bed will be used.

(10/15/03) New York Governor George Pataki was in Newcomb Tuesday to announce the opening to the public of 6,000 acres in the Adirondack High Peaks region. The land is part of parcel recently acquired by the Open Space Institute. Chris Knight reports.
